How a water softener works
Hard water is softened by removing the calcium and magnesium it contains. When hard water passes through the softening system’s resin bed, it exchanges the hard ions in the water for soft ones, so only softened water passes through to your home.
Once the resin bed fills up with hardness ions, it must be cleaned. Salt is typically used in the regeneration (cleaning) process and restores the resin to a “clean” state so the ion exchange process can begin again.

Essential Series Water Softener Silver/Platinum (Single Tank)
Kinetico Essential Series water softeners are a great fit for many households. Even with their small footprint, they have a lot to offer. These non-electric, demand based systems regenerate only when needed so you’ll save money and salt without having to tinker with timers or electrical components. And regeneration only takes a few minutes: a fraction of the time it takes other softeners to come back in service. Your whole household will enjoy the soft, fresh water a Kinetico Essential water softener provides.
The softener shall remove hardness to less than 2 grains per gallon when operated in accordance with the
operating instructions. The system shall provide soft water using a simplex (single tank) configuration. System
regenerations shall be initiated based on gallons processed. The adjustable meter shall allow regenerations to be
set within 5.2 gallon increments. Regeneration Control Valve
The regeneration control valve shall be top mounted (top of media tank), and manufactured from non-corrosive
materials. Control valve shall not weigh more than 4.4 lbs. Control valve shall operate using a minimum pressure
of 25 psi. Pressure shall be used to drive all valve functions. Control valve shall incorporate five operational cycles
including; service, brine draw, slow rinse, fast rinse and brine refill. Service cycle shall operate in an upflow
direction. The brine cycle shall flow downflow, providing countercurrent regeneration. Control valve shall contain a
fixed orifice eductor nozzle and a backwash flow control. The control valve will allow the by-pass of untreated water
to service during the regeneration cycle. Control valve shall be certified to standard NSF/ANSI 61. Media Tanks
The tanks shall be designed for a maximum working pressure of 125 psi and hydrostatically tested at 300 psi.
Tanks shall be made of polypropylene and reinforced with a fiberglass wrapping. Tank shall have a 2.5” threaded
top opening. Tank shall be NSF/ANSI 44 approved. Upper and lower distribution system shall be of a cone slot
design. Distribution system shall provide even distribution of regeneration water and the collection of processed
water. Conditioning Media
Each softener shall use non-solvent, high capacity cation resin having a minimum exchange capacity of 30,000
grains removed per cubic foot of media when regenerated with a dose of 15 lbs of salt per cubic foot of media. The
media shall be solid, of a proper particle size and shall contain no plates, shells, agglomerates or other shapes that
might interfere with the normal function of the water softener. Brine System
A combination salt storage and brine production tank shall be manufactured of corrosion resistant, rigid
polyethylene. The brine tank shall have an internal brine well chamber to house the brine valve assembly. The
brine float assembly shall allow for adjustable salt settings and shall provide for a shutoff to the brine refill. The
brine tank shall include a safety overflow connection to be plumbed to a suitable drain.
